When Life Hands You Lemons
Let’s just do a slow clap here, folks. Wanna know why? Because this is one of the last blog posts from my 2017 wedding season! Yasssssss … Don’t get me wrong. I still have a couple more to post from when I second shot for some friends, but I’m not going to let it hold up my 2018 posts any longer. Especially considering it’s the end of June and I haven’t blogged a single session from this year … OOPS!
Anyway, back to the reason why you’re here – THE LEMONS!
Brandyn & Kyli were married on November 11, 2017 at the Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana and it was such an honor to be there as not only the wedding photographer, but also as a guest! You see, Kyli is my cousin which made this wedding borderline family reunion-ish for me. For the first time ever, I was driven to a wedding by my parents AND I had to find a dog sitter for Clark (for one whole night)! Considering it was just a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, the weather was actually nice. Other than being a little cold, it was a beautiful, sunny day. Perfect for a fall wedding!
This wedding brought a lot of firsts as it was also my first destination wedding! My parents and I drove to Carmel (a suburb of Indianapolis) from Columbus and arrived just before Kyli stepped into her dress. And I was so excited when Kyli told me that she and Brandyn wanted to do a first look! Their ceremony didn’t start until right as the sun was going to set, so doing a first look before the ceremony was going to be one of our only chances to get their bride and groom portraits. After their first look, we drove around the course on a golf cart and spent some time with just the four of us (Brandyn, Kyli, myself and their videographer). Then we met up with their wedding party and had a blast doing their group shots. Their wedding party was definitely a ton of fun! After we wrapped up family formals, it was time for their ceremony and reception.
The ceremony was especially special for our family because of how it honored Kyli’s mother’s memory. We suddenly lost Shawna a few years ago and she was incredibly missed. During the ceremony, Kyli’s uncle carried a dress in Shawna’s favorite color and placed it on a chair in the front row. Kyli bought the dress especially for her. At the reception, Kyli danced with her father and stepfather (my uncle) and Brandyn danced with his mom. After all of the formalities were over and the dance floor opened up, the real party started! Know what happens when a group of retired high school cheerleaders get together at a wedding? The dance floor is PACKED! It was so much fun to photograph!
Now for my favorite part … my three favorite parts of the Lemons wedding:
- Kyli & Brandyn’s first look! With the timeline of the day, a first look just made a ton of sense AND their first look was so sweet! If they had opted out of a first look, they wouldn’t have nearly as many photos from their day as what they ended up with.
- The special way Kyli honored her mom’s memory at the ceremony. It’s definitely one of the most unique ways I’ve seen someone honored at a wedding. It was incredibly special and meaningful.
- Kyli’s dance with her step-father and my uncle, Jon. Uncle Jon, in true Davis fashion, is not one to show emotion often but watching him dance with Kyli at her wedding was so sweet.
Now the moment you’ve all been waiting on – the photos! Enjoy 🙂
Ah, my last 2017 wedding to blog (other than a couple of ones I second shot for other photographers).
Come back soon to see the long anticipated 2018 weddings!
